Lesser Duckweed – Lemna minor
Blooms:
n/a
Plant Height:
Floating on water surface
Origin:
Native
Habitat:
Ponds and streams
Notes:
Very common form of pondweed, this is pale to dark green. The plant body is not differentiated into stems and leaves. In this form the elliptic-obovate plant body occurs in clumps of 2 or 3 together, and is 2–5 mm long. Least Duckweed (Lemna minuta), not pictured, is similar but its plant body comes in pairs, and is only 1–2.5 mm long.
Calla-lily – Zantedeschia aethiopica
Blooms:
Mar–May
Plant Height:
< 1 m
Flower Size:
Large
Origin:
South Africa
Invasive?
Yes – limited
Habitat:
Moist places
Notes:
This is a dramatic flower with a broad, curved white spathe, surrounding the short yellow spike (which is the actual flower). Widely cultivated, occasionally escaping and naturalizing. In summer heat, the leaves wither and a cluster of green fruits ripens to bright red. Photo #4 by CJH.
